Don’t Initiate Yet! What The
Hell Are You Doing?! $#@!
So, you think you’re good at League of Legends? Here’s
the hateful truth: You aren’t. League of Legends is a complex game of strategy,
counter play, and precision, requiring countless hours of practice to perfect. Now,
I’m not saying I know everything about League; frankly, I still have a lot to
learn myself, and champions to master. But, these are some helpful tips that
I’ve learned to help you avoid those mistakes that will feed your lane, or
making a wrong play that costs your team the win.
1. Farm,
farm, farm!
-
Your CS (Creep Score) is far more important
than you think. Most players seem to think that, if they pull ahead in kills,
they will dominate the entire game. This is not entirely true. If a player has
a high kill count, but low CS, and his opponent has a low kill count, but high
CS, this essentially puts the two on even ground. CS is a huge contributing
factor in your champion’s build. Don’t miss those creeps! Focus on racking up
your gold count so you can complete your build and crush the opposition. Go for
the kill when you know it’s safe, and you can avoid feeding the enemy team.
2. Playing
Defensively and Aggressively
-
Play styles are dependent on the
champion you are playing. Certain champions, like Darius, have a better
early-game start; therefore, an aggressive early game would be beneficial to
bullying your opponent out of lane. Other champions, like Nasus, are what are
considered to be late-game monsters or hyper-carries, which are best played in
a defensive style, and should focus on farming. Either of these styles can be
interchangeable, according to situations, such as ganks, and varying champion
match-ups. Do not be predictable! If your opponent(s) can read you, he will
have an advantage over you in lane.
3. Vision!
-
Warding, since the start of the
pre-season, is a team effort, and remains to be. Each player has a ward limit
of 3, and should be dispersed at key points in the map, such as choke points,
breaks in your defenses, and especially your jungle, and your objectives (Blue,
Red,) and neutral objectives (Baron and Dragon). Do not let the enemy get the
upper-hand (and extra gold and buffs) because they are warding and you are not.
Stay ahead of your enemy with wards, so you can coordinate team fights, ganks,
and take objectives safely.
4. Coordinate
with your Team
-
Keep an open line of communication with
your teammates; let them know where you are, and what you’re doing. Above all
else- Stay together. Grouping up to take a tower (extra gold) or objective is
far safer and more reliable than scattering. However, in some instances, split pushing
is a more effect method in keeping the pressure on the enemy team. Teams that
work together will be satisfied with a win.
5. Team
Composition
-
In League, a solid team composition,
consisting of an ADC, Support, AP Carry or Assassin, Jungle, and Top is key to
success. However, champion synergy is just as important, as AoE teams, CC heavy
teams, and other possible compositions will come out on top over other teams
that have less synergy. For example, Jarvan IV’s ultimate, Cataclysm, traps
enemies in unpassable terrain. If he initiates a team fight, with an AoE
composition, comprised of Orianna, Maokai, Ezreal, and Thresh, this could be a
great opportunity for team follow-up. As J IVuses his ultimate, Thresh gets in
close and drops his ultimate right in the thick of battle, Orianna’s ultimate
keeps the enemy pinned, and as Maokai’s defensive ultimate protects his allies
from damage, Ezreal’s ultimate strikes all enemies caught within its range.
6. Know
Your Damage Output
-
In lane, or even in certain 1-on-1
situations, knowing how much damage you can deal, and how much damage you can
take, is key to securing a kill, and saving yourself from an awful respawn
time. Keep an eye on your health value, and your opponent’s health value, more
importantly, know the numerical value of each tick on the HP bar represents.
Ignite an enemy too early and they’ll live to fight another day, leaving you
frustrated. Initiating on an enemy at the wrong time, and you’ll feed the enemy
team a kill. Your team needs you alive, not dead.
7. Don’t
Be Greedy! Don’t Chase!
-
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve
seen countless allies die because they were on a spree, and they chased after
an enemy at low health. This cost them their life, as they fell into an
unsuspecting ambush, and a fair bit of rage ensued. Chasing will almost always
lead to your demise, especially alone. Even if any enemy is at low health, they
can still aid a teammate in ending your life. Being greedy, on the other hand,
is another issue. Share farm, share kills, don’t starve your team. If you’re
fed, and your teammates are not, the enemy will focus you down first, targeting
you through an ambush or coordinated CC, and mop up your team. Share the
wealth! A fed team is better than a fed teammate.
8. Surrender
Is Not An Option!
-
A lot of enemy teams will surrender at
20:00 if they’re losing. Don’t surrender. Countless games that have been
surrendered could’ve been turned around in the losing teams favor. It just
requires patience, strategy, and counter-play.
9. Building
To Fit The Situation
-
Building your champion to properly
counter the enemy team is an important factor in victory. For example, if your
opposition is heavily AD (Attack Damage) focused, build armor to reduce their
damage output against your champion. The same can be said if the enemy is
heavily AP focused, build magic resistance, or if they have high HP values,
build a BOTRK (Blade of the Ruined King) to deal HP% damage and sustain
yourself in battle (This is crucial as an ADC).
10. Don’t
Rage… Please…
-
As you are well aware, a portion of the LoL
community (I’m being kind when I say a “portion”) is highly toxic, negative
players who will only put you down and verbally abuse you on the subject of
your skill level, League knowledge, and other topics. Please, don’t be a part
of it. You’re no better than the rest of them if you do. Raging does nothing
but weigh down on your teammates, and causes you to become frustrated, and as
an end result, lead to repeatedly feeding the enemy team, or rage quitting the
match. It’s understandable that we all get aggravated when we die, or when we
get an almost-kill that just slips from our grasp. Relax, take a deep breath,
and stay focused.
And
those are my 10 tips to help you become better at League of Legends. If there’s
anything else you’d like me to cover, leave a comment!
