My Top 10 Games of Last Gen (Before Nov. 22, 2013)

1.      League of Legends [Riot Games]

-League of Legends strategic gameplay, and its vast variety of its 100+ champions, takes it to the top. Its 5v5 MOBA gameplay is unrivaled by competitors such as HoN (Heroes of Newerth), and DOTA, and continual bi-weekly updates add new champions and balance patches to keep the game interesting and fresh.

2.      Minecraft [Mojang/4J Studios]

- Minecraft expansive, randomly generated worlds, with multiple environments (Swamp, Snow, Plain, Forest, etc) set players free in an open landscape to do whatever they desire, and that’s only the basic concept. From building your first house, to conquering the Nether, and defeating the Ender Dragon, the adventures to be had in the Minecraft universe are limitless.

3.      The Walking Dead [Telltale Games]

-The Walking Dead is the pinnacle of how story and choice-driven games should be. Each and every decision you make affects and changes the outcome of the next episode, and can even end the life of a beloved character, or change how others perceive you in the apocalyptic, zombie infested world.

4.      Injustice: Gods Among Us [NetherRealm Studios]

-Injustice was NetherRealm Studio’s second attempt at branching away from the Mortal Kombat franchise, and this second DC iteration (after the failed MKvDCU) was met was amazing success. The stunning graphics, fluid combo system, and the unique wager system and inter-actable environments gave the game its own flair, changing the pace of the fighting-game genre.

5.      Pokemon X & Y [GameFreak]

-Pokemon X & Y was GameFreak’s transformation from 2D to a fully 3D world with highly detailed 3D Pokemon animated models. Battles have never been so intense, as the stunning new attack animations add a level of flashiness and believability to each and every Pokemon battle.

6.      Guild Wars 2 [NCsoft]

-Guild Wars 2 massively open world, and innovations to the standard MMORPG gameplay, really drew players in (and me as well). From the in-depth build trees (talents), to the diverse classes, where every weapon changes the set of abilities each class is allowed to use, Guild Wars 2 is continually changing the mold as to what defines a great MMO.

7.      Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 [Treyarch]

-Treyarch’s latest installment to the Call of Duty franchise really changed the way you play the fast-paced, hectic FPS. The Pick-10 system redefined Call of Duty’s create-a-class system at its core, allowing new options for load-out and perk combinations that changed the pace of the typical CoD run-and-gun gameplay.

8.      Assassin’s Creed: Revelations [Ubisoft]

-Revelation’s was Ubisoft’s greatest iteration in the series, with Brotherhood at a close second. Revelations concluded the tales of both Ezio Auditore, and Altair Ibn-La’ahad, while making continual innovations to the single player experience, as well as multiplayer refinements and balance changes.

9.      Dead Space 2 [Visceral Games]

- The intensity that comes with playing a Dead Space game is unrivaled in this entry of the trilogy of games. The Sci-fi survival horror experience is unique and entertaining, with its gory and lengthy, horror filled 10+ hour single player campaign, and competitive multiplayer modes that pit armed security personnel against the viscous Necromorphs.

10.  Gears of War 3 [Epic Games]

- The violent Gears of Wars series is known for its challenge, cooperative campaigns, but especially, its competitive 5v5 multiplayer modes. Gears of War 3 concluded the trilogy, with the fall of the Locust horde, and additional characters, new weapons, maps, game modes, and executions to the famed Gears multiplayer. “Eat boot!”

And that concludes my top 10. What did you think? What are your top ten games of last gen? Let me know with a comment!
