Game of the Show
What is going on, my fellow gamers? It’s Bchace here, and I am sooo ready to talk about E3 with you guys. There’s been a lot of announcements, both good and bad, that I’d love to talk about. But, first, I want to talk with you about the games that have caught my eye the most at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. It will be almost impossible to rank these games from most excited to least excited, quite frankly, I’m excited for all of them. However! I want to focus on one in particular that just absolutely blew me away, my choice for game of the show 2014...

MORTAL KOMBAT!

That is right! Nether Realm Studios is releasing yet another Mortal Kombat game. As you can imagine, being an avid fighting game fan, I am more than excited for this game. Injustice: Gods Among Us was absolutely incredible, and I was dying watching E3, desperately waiting for its announcement, and then, there it was… MK X, the sequel to one of, if not, the best Mortal Kombat games ever made. Let’s break down what we’ve learned so far…

The initial trailer had Sub Zero and Scorpion engaging in intense combat, using their signature moves (and hand to hand combat) to take each other down in a snow covered forest. The CGI was absolutely incredible, however, the music they chose for the trailer did not fit the overall theme that Nether Realm was trying to convey to its audience. My intial impressions of the trailer were that the developers were trying a far more serious tone, a darker tone. I half expected RAP to be mixed with my MK, I honestly expected a remixed version of the classic theme from the movies, but, I digress, it wasn’t all that bad (although I’m probably being a bit too forgiving here). The trailer ended with Sub Zero in a crumpled state, struggling to stand up. At this instant, Scorpion hurled his rope spear, as it penetrated deep into Sub Zero’s skull. FINISH HIM, beckoned in the background, as his head was severed, and posted to a tree with what appeared to one of Scorpion’s ninja swords, and he watched as Sub Zero’s ice blue eyes faded. Sounds pretty cool, right? The sheer level of detail that went into this trailer was baffling, to say the least.

Currently, there is a lot of speculation going around the inter-webs as to what characters Nether Realm will be including in this most anticipated sequel. So far, the confirmed characters are as follows…

Scorpion

Sub Zero

D’vorah *New*

Ferra/Torr *New*

Kotal Kahn *New*

Cassie Cage *New*

Ermac (Concept Art teased)

7 of the 30 or so characters have been confirmed, which leaves about 23+ characters left to our imagination. It hasn’t been confirmed, however, only rumoured that the devs are going to focus on creating a new cast of characters, with only several returning classics (Scorpion, Sub Zero, etc). Fans are dying to see Reptile, and many other favorites make their debut on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems. It would be a shame to see several favourites (Smoke being my own personal favourite, alongside Quan Chi) to be left out from the roster. There’s always DLC, right? (lol)

Brief glimpses haven’t revealed much info regarding the new combat system, mechanics, and several other key aspects of a fighting game. However, after watching about an hour or so of hands-on gameplay via Youtube and other sources, I’ve come to conclude that MKX is making a genuine effort to innovate the fighting game genre. Here’s how…

Within the current build (Early to late Alpha), a stamina meter has been added, which puts a limitation on how often you can use your dashes, or take advantage of the many intractable background objects within a given stage. Stamina recharges within a few seconds, so it should mainly prevent high mobility spamming, dash spamming, and add more depth to the core gameplay, making some moves more risky than others.  Rumoured has it, that Nether Realm has also implemented the stamina meter with the use of Run Combos, which I have found very little information about, however, they have been confirmed by several gamers who have had hands-on experience with the E3 demo.

Background objects are indeed a part of MKX, which was taken from Nether Realm Studio’s previous game, Injustce: God’s among us, however, they are far less prevalent. Some objects can be chained together within combos, adding to the already deep combo system.

The single, biggest change in MKX is the option to choose 1 of 3 fighting styles. These fighting styles govern what special moves you have access to, and some add additional effects to those special moves. For example, choosing Scorpion, he has the option of selecting Ninjitsu, Hellfire, and Inferno. Each of these choices alters his play style, from aggressive, to defensive, an aggressive/defensive hybrid, or strictly ranged.
