Tips and Tricks to Survive and Conquer the Dark Zone

You are about to enter a free-for-all, lawless area of Manhattan, where loot is king, and players are out to hunt you down solely for their own personal greed…

            Welcome to the Dark Zone!

In order for you to survive and keep your loot, I have come up with a few handy tips for you, Agent. Use them wisely…

1.      Never go at it alone

Most players travel in groups of two to four players, meaning venturing solo into this deadly PvP environment is suicide. Stay close together, in a tight group to take out mobs and farm DZ currency more efficiently. Have one member of your squad be a designated Medic to keep team members healthy, especially during tense fire fights. First Aid and Support Station are two abilities that are quintessential to survival.

2.      Stay alert around non-hostile agents and wandering mobs

Anyone can turn ROGUE at any time, especially if you have loot. Be aware that other players can see your contaminated loot bag, but its contents are a mystery to them, meaning that you COULD have something that they want. Keep an eye out, especially at your flank. A careless Agent is a dead Agent. A Rogue will shoot you in the back, even if you appear friendly, especially during extraction. Which leads into my next point…

3.      Scout and clear Extraction Points before calling for a chopper

This is crucial if you don’t want to be ambushed as you are putting your loot on the rope. You and your squad are extremely vulnerable during this animation, as it takes about 3-4 seconds to place and secure your loot bag. That is 3-4 seconds that an enemy has the chance to shoot you or throw a fragmentation grenade at your feet. Always clear an area of all Rioters, Rykers, and Cleaners before calling an extraction, and remember, all Agents will be alerted to your extraction in the immediate area. Don’t take it easy until your loot is secured.

4.      Farm Landmarks for efficient and steady DZ Currency flow

Landmarks are marked on your map. These areas generally host higher level enemies and named elites, meaning superior or higher quality loot will have a high chance of dropping. Take your time, and clear the perimeters one enemy at a time. These areas will net you decent DZ exp and currency, used to purchase and unlock gear, weapons, and mods from various vendors scattered across the DZ. The better gear you have, the more of an edge you will have on your opponents.

5.      Restock before you run out of supplies

The DZ is the absolute worst place to run out of medkits and ammo. You can resupply at any of the Checkpoints and Safe Houses. You don’t want to be caught by a wandering Rogue Agent without necessary items for survival and damage.

6.      Level and Gear advantage

Having a one or two level advantage makes the world of difference in the DZ. (Level advantage only applies to lower brackets). The more DPS, HP, and Skill Power you have over your opponent(s), the better. So, for example, if you’re in the mid-level bracket (15-19), at level 15, expect to be out-classed and out-gunned by higher levels, especially those with better equipment. In RPGs, equipment ALWAYS gives players an edge in combat.

7.      IF you’re going to go Rogue, pick the right moment

You’ll hear some profanities thrown your way, but, going Rogue can be rewarding and fun, if you’re smart about it. I can’t stress this enough! If you die while Rogue, you will lose a chunk of XP, DZ Credits, and DZ keys. It’s even debatable if going Rogue is even worth it. I can tell you that, personally, even if you PvP, in most instances it’s NOT worth going Rogue, this is especially true if you’re alone. Don’t attack an Agent(s) who is or are at Full HP. That’s suicide in most circumstances. Attack at the flank, when he or she is wounded or unsuspecting of your presence. If you have a health advantage starting combat, and the element of surprise, it makes things immensely easier on you. Now, this leads me to my final point…

8.      Always have an escape plan

Make sure of this. Once you’re Rogue, or if you’re eluding Rogue Agents, find secluded areas where they won’t think to go hunting for you. Take that random alleyway, head down into the maze-like subway systems. Do whatever you need to do to stay alive. Remember, the consequences for dying are severe.

I hope you’re having as much fun with this game as I am!

I’m now 40+ hours into it, and I’m still hooked. Enjoy your stay in Manhattan, Agents, and good luck in the Dark Zone!

            As always,

            Game on, guys!
